Tuesday, December 19, American Flyers: Export Models To cyclist the world over the name ‘Carlton’ stands supreme for hand-made cycle design, construction and finish. It is Carlton policy, however, to supply our machines only through Carlton dealers, who have been selected for their interest in cycling and their ability to give satisfactory service. A genuine hand-made cycle is lively and responsive. The acquisition of Carlton by Raleigh in marked a new era for the company in building and selling top-end racing bicycles.

It led, eventually, to its sponsoring the first British team to win the Tour de France, and for the first and only time, with a British designed and built bicycle. At the same time, Carlton was suddenly thrust into the nascent American market and figured prominently in the country’s astonishing “Bike Boom” of the mid s. In many ways, America was the making and eventually the breaking of Carlton which went from a small bespoke factory to one mass producing more high end British racing bicycles than any firm before or since.

This article attempts to document Carlton’s initial exports to the United States c. What was then the largest cycle factory in the world, Raleigh’s famous Nottingham works, was the backdrop to a newly released film, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, based on a story by Nottingham native and former Raleigh employee Alan Sillitoe and starring Albert Finney.

And, most importantly, the business and the British cycle industry itself was transformed with the takeover of Raleigh by Tube Investments which was preceded by a few weeks by Raleigh acquiring Carlton Cycles. The first of Britain’s “New Wave” films probing the changing societal world of the ordinary British worker, Saturday Night And Sunday Morning was shot in and around Raleigh’s sprawling Nottingham works and fittingly released in when the Company and the British cycle industry itself was fraught with the change and upheaval.

The biggest of two amalgamations, and the largest cycle merger in the history of the industry, on 19 April , was a veritable mating of giants. In a corporate sense, it was TI that purchased Raleigh, but the decision to consolidate all manufacture at Nottingham made it a Raleigh centered acquisition.

History of Technology Heroes and Villains – A little light reading Here you will find a brief history of technology. Initially inspired by the development of batteries, it covers technology in general and includes some interesting little known, or long forgotten, facts as well as a few myths about the development of technology, the science behind it, the context in which it occurred and the deeds of the many personalities, eccentrics and charlatans involved. You may find the Search Engine , the Technology Timeline or the Hall of Fame quicker if you are looking for something or somebody in particular.

Scroll down and see what treasures you can discover. Background We think of a battery today as a source of portable power, but it is no exaggeration to say that the battery is one of the most important inventions in the history of mankind. Volta’s pile was at first a technical curiosity but this new electrochemical phenomenon very quickly opened the door to new branches of both physics and chemistry and a myriad of discoveries, inventions and applications.

The electronics, computers and communications industries, power engineering and much of the chemical industry of today were founded on discoveries made possible by the battery. Pioneers It is often overlooked that throughout the nineteenth century, most of the electrical experimenters, inventors and engineers who made these advances possible had to make their own batteries before they could start their investigations. They did not have the benefit of cheap, off the shelf, mass produced batteries.

For many years the telegraph, and later the telephone, industries were the only consumers of batteries in modest volumes and it wasn’t until the twentieth century that new applications created the demand that made the battery a commodity item. In recent years batteries have changed out of all recognition. No longer are they simple electrochemical cells. Today the cells are components in battery systems, incorporating electronics and software, power management and control systems, monitoring and protection circuits, communications interfaces and thermal management.

Notes on the Beginnings of Concertina Playing in Ireland, — Dan Worrall Introduction The Anglo concertina, and its direct antecedents, the two-row German and Anglo-German concertinas, have long been popular in Irish traditional music circles. The past three decades have seen a great resurgence in its use, and much has been written about those surviving players and their histories. Oral history only reaches back as far as living memory, so such accounts only extend with any real detail to perhaps eighty or more years.

Beyond the memories of these sources, there are a few all-too-brief accounts, written posthumously, about the famous Clare player Mrs. In addition, most of the twentieth century sources interviewed in published accounts have been from County Clare, leaving largely unrecorded the extent to which concertinas were played elsewhere in Ireland, and raising a question as to why surviving players of the mid th century were so highly concentrated in that County.

A former Flloors Go carpet and laminate flooring shop on Chester Road is to be bulldozed if the plans are approved. Aldi says the development will make better use of the site, off Chester Road, represent a multi-million investment in the local economy and lead to the creation of about 40 jobs. How the new store will look It also says the new store will take the pressure of its other stores at Chester Road in New Oscott and the Fox and Goose.

The plans include parking spaces for cars, including six disabled and six parent-and-child spaces. The shop is also on a busy bus route. The Chester Road store proposal has been revealed a month after a Government inspector rejected Aldi’s plans for a new store at Great Barr on the edge of the Queslett Nature Reserve.
