A study published in the journal Nature gives a date of 4. The small quantities of basaltic lunar rocks collected during manned exploration of the Moon date to around 3. From the BBC report: Precision dating of a lunar rock that fell to Earth shows our satellite must have had lava erupting across its vast plains 4. This is hundreds of millions of years earlier than had been indicated by the rocks collected by Apollo astronauts. The origin and evolution of the Moon remain controversial, with one of the most important questions for lunar evolution being the timing and duration of basaltic mare magmatism. Here we report the result of ion microprobe U—Pb dating of phosphates in a lunar meteorite, Kalahari , which is classified as a very-low-Ti mare-basalt breccia. In situ analyses of five phosphate grains, associated with basaltic clasts, give an age of 4. These ancient phosphate ages are thought to represent the crystallization ages of parental basalt magma, making Kalahari one of the oldest known mare basalts. We suggest that mare basalt volcanism on the Moon started as early as 4.

The municipality of Nerja is found within a larger area called the Axarquia, a region which accounts for almost all of the eastern Costa del Sol and has as its capital the city of Velez-Malaga , a small city but a historic one. Nerja is neighboured to the west by the municipality of Torrox which has both a hill top village and coastal area, to the east by the tiny village of Maro and to the north by the pretty mountain village of Frigiliana.

Technomorphologic, functional and geochemical analyses of the obsidian remains from these localities were carried out. Results show that obsidian comes from Pampa del Asador a source located over km from the sites. Two chronological moments in the exploitation of this raw material were identified with an increase in consumption over time. Production sequences indicate that tools may have arrived already manufactured to the sites.
Production strategies are similar to the ones recorded for local raw materials. There is no evidence to indicate that obsidian was a more valued resource than local rocks. We cannot ascertain that obsidian acquisition was part of a sporadic exploitation strategy from the source region. We believe that this raw material was obtained in mobility circuits and from intergroup contact.
Functional analysis was combined with a techno-morphological and distribu-tional approach, the investigation on raw materials and the study of the technological strategies of production and consumption. The significance of combining functional analysis with other research methods involving lithic remains is emphasized. By articulating different methodologies, it is possible to understand the systems of technological organization.
Galeras Major volcanoes in Colombia Nevado del Ruiz lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire , a region that encircles the Pacific Ocean and contains some of the world’s most active volcanoes. It is the third most northerly of the volcanoes lying in the North Volcanic Zone of the Andean Volcanic Belt , which contains 75 of the Holocene-age volcanoes in South America. At lower elevations, the slopes become less steep; their inclination is about 10 degrees.
From there on, foothills stretch almost to the edge of the Magdalena River , north of the volcano and the Cauca River to the west. At times, ice on the summit has melted, generating devastating lahars, including the continent’s deadliest eruption in The summit of Nevado del Ruiz is covered by glaciers nevado means “snow-covered” in Spanish , which formed over many thousands of years, and have generally retreated since the last glacial maximum.

Dec 04, Arenal Snapshot Summary: During the daytime, visitors explored Arenal rappelling down its waterfalls, hiking through its rainforest and soaring through its valleys on zip lines. Meanwhile the volcano’s rage still bubbles underneath the surface heating the largest collection of hot springs in Costa Rica. On clear days, a tendril of smoke still curls out of Arenal’s caldera like the wick of an extinguished candle. Hiking The volcano’s split personality reveals its good side from the small town of La Fortuna where centuries old rainforest crawls up the eastern slopes.
Beside the volcano lies its dormant cousin, Cerro Chato, covered in a layer of equally thick rainforest that’s been growing since the volcano’s last eruption some 38, years ago. Hikers ascend through the undergrowth to a crater lake — nearly a mile in diameter. Nearby, the roaring cascade of the La Fortuna waterfall passes over Cerro Chato before plummeting feet in a spectacular display seen from one of three viewpoints around the falls.
On the western slopes of Arenal volcano, its black heart has spilled out over the mountainside, the cooled magma a reminder of three towns it destroyed in the eruption. In the Arenal Volcano National Park, travelers can hike through the volcanic badlands in-between the rainforest and the pioneer forest where tall grasses and twisted trees begin the forest’s regeneration. Standing on top of the lava flow, hikers can look out across Lake Arenal, spot toucans perched in the tree tops and see incredible views of the volcano.
Hot Springs While relaxing in the hot springs around Arenal, it’s easy to forget that the pleasantly warm mineral waters come from boiling underground wells and thermal springs. Each of Arenal’s resorts offers a different ambiance to enjoy the thermal waters.

Due to the proximity of the mountains to the coast, the city has a large gap between its north and south sides, thus providing views of the sea and mountain vistas from almost every part of the city. The coastline is heavily urbanised; most of the land not built up with golf courses has been developed with small residential areas. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the south. Route 52 starts just north of the city of Mendoza and connects with the small mountain town of Uspallata, some 95 km away. It traverses the Natural Resource Area of Villavicencio, a thermal source and semi-abandoned resort. Bottled water is produced here and sold across Argentina. Some narrow sections are pretty hair-raising with a view straight down the slope.
You continuously hope no one is coming in the other direction, as passing each other would mean one would have to backtrack, not fun! In places rain has taken down some of the side of the road and there is barely enough width left for one vehicle. A mud slide higher up would close the road and impose turning around, somehow, and driving back down. With that on my mind I kept pushing up and occasionally stopped to take photos. The view and the solitude are breathtaking.
Once up on top the clouds were touching the ground of the high plateau creating some interestingly moody scenes. I detoured to the ruins of the mines of Paramillos. Based on ancient Inca mines further developed by the Spaniards, and now abandoned. I spent the rest of the day driving through the desert and taking photos of odd rock formations, enjoying the solitude and absolute silence. View from the end of the trail at m Minas de Paramillos.
